Does Economic Growth Inevitably Lead to an increase in Resource Consumption?

A recent article in the Guardian: ‘Economic Growth is needed to Reduce Global Poverty…’, by Charles Kenny, leads to the question: Does economic growth inevitably lead to an increase in resource consumption?  This is particularly important at this moment in time, because the sustainable human population given current resource consumption is less than two billion...

It has been known for over two hundred years that injecting large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere would cause a significant degree of global warming, pumping energy into the atmosphere, increasing instability and producing extremes of heat, cold, storm, flood and drought…  We won’t talk about tipping points, methane and the cryosphere…
